Beerducation – Looking After Your Beer

Beer expert Briony Liebich from Flavour Logic has been reminding beer drinkers of something many people overlook — how you store and serve your beer can have a huge impact on how it tastes.

Unlike wine, most beer is designed to be enjoyed fresh. In fact, the three biggest enemies of beer are time, heat and light.

Leaving beer in a hot garage, on a sunny windowsill or in the back of the car can quickly damage flavour, causing stale, cardboard-like characteristics and robbing the beer of its freshness.

Hop-forward beers such as Pale Ales, IPAs and Hazy IPAs are particularly vulnerable, with their vibrant aromas fading much faster than many drinkers realise.

Briony also points out that serving temperature matters. While many Australians drink beer as cold as possible, excessive chilling can actually suppress flavour and aroma.

And one final tip — pour your beer into a glass whenever possible. Not only does it look better, but it allows aromas to develop properly, giving you a much fuller tasting experience
